Prof. Kailani Muhammad Warns Against Foreign Interference, Calls for Religious Unity in Nigeria
Professor Kailani Muhammad has strongly cautioned against what he described as attempts by foreign political actors to interfere in Nigeria’s internal religious and security affairs, warning that such actions could deepen tensions and threaten national unity.
In a video message circulated on Thursday, the Professor condemned recent statements allegedly attributed to some United States lawmakers, which he said appear aimed at fueling division between Muslims and Christians, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
According to him, the continued focus on religious matters such as the abolition of Sharia law risks provoking unnecessary tension in regions where religious coexistence has existed for decades.
“Nigeria does not need external forces to define its religious or cultural systems,” he stated. “Any attempt to impose foreign solutions on our internal affairs will only destabilize the peace we have struggled to maintain.”
Professor Muhammad emphasized that Sharia law, as practiced in parts of Northern Nigeria, is a constitutional matter and forms part of the region’s religious and cultural identity. He warned that attempts to undermine it could be perceived as an attack on the rights of Muslim communities.
He also cautioned the Federal Government against welcoming foreign military involvement, stressing that Nigerians — particularly in the North — do not support the presence of foreign troops on Nigerian soil.
“Foreign intervention has never solved Africa’s problems,” he said. “History has shown that such involvement is often driven by economic and strategic interests rather than genuine concern for peace or human rights.”
The Professor urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other national leaders to prioritize Nigeria’s sovereignty and resist pressure that could compromise the country’s independence or inflame religious sentiments.
He further called on religious leaders across faiths to continue promoting dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, noting that Muslims and Christians have lived together harmoniously in many parts of the country for generations.
“Our unity must not be sacrificed for external agendas,” he added. “Nigeria’s strength lies in mutual respect, not division.” The remarks come amid growing global attention on Nigeria’s security challenges and renewed international discourse on religious freedom in the country.
